Engineering & Remediation
EnvApps provides focused engineering services to document site conditions and perform remediation in a professionally sound and cost-competitive manner. Cleanup techniques routinely employed to cleanup impacted soil and/or groundwater include:
- Soil Vapor Extraction
- Dual-phase Extraction
- Product Recovery (Active and Passive Systems)
- Groundwater Extraction, Treatment, and Discharge
- In-situ Injection Technologies including Chemical Oxidation, and Aerobic and Anaerobic Bioremediation
- Soil Excavation and On-site Treatment or Off-site Disposal
- Human Health Risk Assessment (as a closure tool)
- Air and Ozone Sparging
EnvApps knows that any of these approaches can be effective under the right conditions: the key is in understanding the actual site geology and hydrogeology, taking into account engineering and other project constraints, and then implementing the proper remedial action under the known field conditions. EnvApps will not advocate the latest popular approach or technology just because it is a good marketing tool.
Example Projects:
Nitrate Remediation System - Designed, installed, and operated a 10-well, 75 gpm extraction system, extracting 200 million gallons of groundwater containing 850 tons of dissolved nitrate over a 9 year period. System implementation enabled the first land use covenant in Orange County, California, allowing commercial development of a former fertilizer manufacturing plant.
Refinery Vapor Extraction System - Designed, installed, and operated a 1,500 scfm vapor extraction system in an operating unit of a major oil refinery. All design and construction services performed in accordance with refinery specifications and under direct refinery project review, including Hazops evaluation.
Refinery Biopolymer Intercept Trench - Designed, installed, and operated numerous product recovery systems in marine terminals and refineries of major oil companies. One project included installation of a 125-foot long product intercept trench, using the biopolymer slurry method within saturated marine sands adjacent to a seawall. Within the first 9 months, approximately 12,000 gallons of product were intercepted by the trench and prevented from flowing into the Los Angeles Harbor.
Refinery Dissolved & LNAPL Plume Control - O&M of a 31-well groundwater and product recovery system to control dissolved and free phase LNAPL plume migration at a Los Angeles area major oil refinery.
Ozone Sparging System - Designed, installed and operated an ozone sparging system in fractured volcanic bedrock at a former drycleaning facility. PCE concentrations decreased three orders of magnitude over a 24-month operating period.
Excavation Inside Building - Excavated approximately 40 cubic yards of impacted soil from inside a drycleaners at a fully occupied commercial strip mall. The work took a little over a week and was performed over extended working hours to minimize impact to tenants. No further work was required by the regulatory agency except groundwater monitoring. Site closure is pending. |
